Refilling your heating system

If your system has lost pressure due to natural causes, a leak or you have bled the radiators, you will need to refill it, if you have a leak you will need to resolve this first.

If your boiler is leaking we recommend calling a gas safe registered engineer.

On your heating system, there will be a filling loop, which is normally located near your boiler or part of your boiler or you may sometimes find them in your airing cupboard.

Most commonly looks like the filling loop below.

filling loop

When you have found your filling loop, we recommend opening one of the taps and then slowly opening the other one, as you don't know your water flow rate or pressure, you don't want to over pressurise the heating system, your heating system will typically need to be filled to 1-1.5 bar pressure.

pressure gauge

If your pressure gauge is not near your filling loop you will need someone to help let you know when the system is at the correct pressure. once it is at the correct pressure you can put the taps back as they were, that's it you are done.

if you continue to have pressure issues this could indicate a leak on your heating system somewhere or an issued with your boiler, expansion vessel and or pressure relief valve.

if there is no issue with your boiler and you cannot find a leak you could try putting Fernox leak sealer in your system, however, this would only be a temporary measure and we would recommend you get a heating engineer to look at your system and do a permanent fix.
